What is social media?

Social media primarily means websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.  It is a computer-mediated technology that allows to create and share information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks. The familiar features of social media are

  • Social media are interactive and Internet-based applications.
  • This is a User-generated content or User-created content. This is the lifeblood of social media organism. This includes text posts or comments,digital photos or videos, and data generated through all online interactions.
  • The users create service-specific profiles for the website or applications that are designed and maintained by the social media organization.
  • Social media clear the way for the development of online social networks by connecting a user’s profile with those of other individuals or groups.

Social media came into existence in 20th century. The first recognizable social media site, Six Degrees, was created in 1997. It enabled users to upload a profile and make friends with other users. In 1999, the first blogging sites became popular, creating a social media sensation and it is still popular today. After the invention of blogging, social media began to blow up in popularity.

Social networking was born one day in 1971, when the first email was sent. The two computers were sitting right next to each other. The message said “qwertyuiop’. In 1978, the Bulletin Board System(BBS), was created. The BBS was the first system that lets users interact with one another through the internet. It was slow, but it was a good start. The major drawback was that only one user could log in at a time.

In 1994, the first social networking site was created. The name given was “Geocities”.  Geocities allowed the users to create and customize their own web sites, grouping them into different ‘cities’ based on the site’s content. The following year, another site named The Globe.com launched to public, giving users the ability to interact with people who have the same hobbies and interests, and to publish their own content.

SixDegrees.com is one of the earliest social networking sites, but did not gain much success. The idea is based on the theory that people are separated by no more than six degrees from one another. Many people complained that the membership invitations were spam, filling up their websites with junk files. It was sold in 2001 for $125 million but was completely shut down from the then year itself.

Social media vary from paper-based and traditional electronic media such as radio and television including quality, frequency, usability, closeness, and stability. Social media operate in a dialogic transmission system which is a many sources to many receivers system whereas traditional media operates under a monologic transmission model which means a one source to many receivers way, such as a paper newspaper which is delivered to many subscribers. Social networking is a form of social media, used for either interactive, educational, informational or entertaining purposes. Social media comes in many forms, but all of them are related: blogs, forums, podcasts, photo sharing, social bookmarking, widgets, video and many.

Facebook came into the social networking scene a little bit later. It was launched in 2004, and the primary intention was to connect US college students. The ‘exclusive’ feature proved to be a success, and in its first month, over half of the 19,500 Harvard students signed up.
